Surgical Techniques

Many symptoms related to the large bowel can be treated without the need for surgery.

Often, once a diagnosis has been made all that is needed is discussion and reassurance and perhaps a change in diet. However, if your condition requires an operation it is important that your surgeon discusses with you the various options that are available. As technology advances this is becoming an increasingly complex area. Open abdominal surgery is being performed less frequently as laparoscopic or laparoscopically assisted surgery becomes widely available (key hole surgery).

This new approach to surgery coupled, with an enhanced recovery programme, results in a quicker recover, less time spent in hospital, faster return to work and perhaps fewer complications. Members of the North Birmingham Colon Care have been instrumental in the development of this in North Birmingham.
