Mr. Dominic J. Browse

I have undertaken various roles within the hospital including Upper GI cancer lead, Clinical Director for Surgery at Good Hope Hospital and Clinical Lead following the merger with Heart of England Foundation Trust

Professional profile

I have been a consultant surgeon at Good Hope Hospital for 17 years. My specialty expertise covers a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions in both Colorectal surgery and Upper GI surgery. I have a particular interest in Gall stone surgery and Hernia surgery, including developments in laparoscopic techniques. I provide the local expertise for complex gall bladder surgery and deliver a specialist hernia service at Good Hope Hospital for complex hernias.

I have been involved throughout my career in the development of quality services including the role of audit, clinical governance and outcome measurement. As a result I monitor my personal results. My outcomes from over 2000 Gall bladder operations are excellent with only one minor Bile Duct Injury (against a national average of major injury in 1:300 cases). In over 350 elective bowel cancer resections, my 5 year survival rates of 90% for Dukes A and B cancers and 70% for Dukes C compare well with the published literature. I am an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme with completion rates over 95%.

I enjoy hospital politics and was previously the Clinical Director for Surgery at Good Hope Hospital and Clinical Lead following the merger with Heart of England Foundation Trust.

I trained at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, qualifying in 1985. My surgical training was predominantly in the Oxford Region and later South East Thames following a period of research at King’s College Hospital. My specialty training was in Hepatobiliary surgery at King’s then Colorectal surgery as a Junior Consultant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. I was appointed as a Consultant at Good Hope Hospital in 1998.
