Mr. Haney Youssef

Professional Profile

I am a colorectal and general surgery consultant at Good Hope Hospital, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. As well as carrying out a range of colorectal and general surgical procedures, I have a special interest in advanced bowel cancer and peritoneal malignancy. I was trained in this highly skilled surgery in Basingstoke, a world renowned centre in the treatment of bowel and peritoneal cancer, and have set up the peritoneal tumour service at Good Hope Hospital This is the only one of its kind in the Midlands and one of three such units in the UK. This involves using extensive abdominal surgery to remove all visible cancer that has spread throughout the abdomen, then to wash the abdomen with a heated chemotherapy bath to kill invisible disease.

In addition to this highly specialised surgery, I perform laparoscopic (keyhole) operations for bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), diverticular disease, gallstones and hernia repair.

I have also been trained in treating anal conditions including haemorrhoids (piles), fissures and anal fistulas. As well as more conventional techniques for the treatment of piles, I offer THD (a less painful treatment for piles aimed at tying off the circulation to the piles, using special equipment to identify the circulation). I have also been a trainer on a National Course training surgeons on the treatment of Haemorrhoids, held in Basingstoke.

I am appointed as a Consultant Colorectal and General surgeon to Good Hope Hospital and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Birmingham University.

I trained at the University of Birmingham (1992-1997) and during my postgraduate training I was an anatomy teacher at Cambridge University Medical School and anatomy tutor at St John’s College, Cambridge. I have also been an Honorary Research fellow and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, as well as carrying out research at the University of Warwick.

Prior, to my Consultant appointment, I was the senior Peritoneal Malignancy and Pseudomyxoma fellow at the internationally renowned colorectal unit in Basingstoke. I have also completed surgical travelling fellowships at the Washington Cancer Institute, Washington DC, and also in Leuven, Belgium. The focus of these fellowships was gaining skills in advanced cancer and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgical techniques.
